Nasarawa State University (NSUK) Partners with VDI to Pioneer Support Center for Students with Disabilities

In a groundbreaking move towards fostering inclusivity in education, Nasarawa State University (NSUK) is set to collaborate with the Visionary Disability Initiative (VDI) to establish a state-of-the-art Support Center catering to the unique needs of students with disabilities.

The stage for this transformative partnership was set as the Executive Director of VDI, Barr Catherine Edeh, graciously welcomed the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) of NSUK, Prof. Abdullahi Modibbo, and his distinguished team at the VDI office. The meeting aimed to explore synergies between the two entities, laying the foundation for the creation of a Support Center that promises to redefine the educational landscape for students with special needs.

Expressing her enthusiasm, Barr Catherine Edeh emphasized the importance of collective efforts in achieving disability inclusion in Nigeria. She commended the proactive stance of the NSUK management, stating, “Where there is a positive attitude, we can guarantee a change.”

The NSUK delegation, led by the DVC, reciprocated the warm sentiments and gratitude for the reception at VDI. Prof. Abdullahi Modibbo outlined the purpose of their visit, focusing on discussions to identify areas of collaboration with VDI in establishing the groundbreaking Support Center. He highlighted Nasarawa State’s commitment to providing free education for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and expressed the university’s dedication to becoming a nurturing home for students with disabilities.

Accompanying the DVC were esteemed individuals including Dr. Magaji Joshua, Dean of Students Affairs; Prof. Orame Alaku, Dean of the Faculty of Education; Dr (Mrs) Jummai Jerry, Head of the Department of Special Education; and Emmanuel I. Osita, a proficient sign language interpreter, among others.

The meeting concluded with a presentation by Barr Catherine Edeh, unveiling VDI’s ambitious 5-year Strategic Plan and Newsletter to the NSUK team. This collaborative venture is poised not only to create an inclusive learning environment but also to set a precedent for disability support within the broader Nigerian education system.

As NSUK takes pioneering strides towards enhancing accessibility and support for students with special needs, this strategic collaboration with VDI is anticipated to be a beacon of change, marking a significant step forward in the journey towards comprehensive disability inclusion in Nigeria’s educational landscape.
