Mohammed Idris Champions Social Inclusion for Persons with Disabilities
In a significant move towards promoting the rights and privileges of persons with disabilities, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has announced the establishment of a five-man committee tasked with designing a comprehensive framework for engagement with the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities. This initiative aims to raise awareness and advocate for the rights of individuals with disabilities across Nigeria.
Idris made this directive during a meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday, where he welcomed Dr. James Lalu, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, on a courtesy visit to his office.
“With immediate effect, we will form a committee to collaborate closely with you to address your specific needs, ensuring the realization of your objectives,” affirmed Idris. He pledged full support from his ministry, offering to leverage the public information channels and resources to safeguard the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities and combat discrimination against them.
Highlighting President Tinubu’s commitment to social inclusion, Idris assured that under the current administration, no segment of the Nigerian population would be marginalized. “President Tinubu believes in giving visibility, recognition, and responsibility to persons with disabilities,” emphasized Idris, underscoring the administration’s dedication to inclusivity.
Furthermore, Idris expressed his intent to spearhead advocacy efforts with state governors for the adoption and implementation of the Disability Law in their respective states, ensuring nationwide protection and support for persons with disabilities.
Addressing the significant contribution of individuals with disabilities to national development, Idris emphasized their role in enriching the forthcoming National Values Charter implementation. “The 35 million people with disabilities represent a critical mass whose unique perspectives, talents, and experiences can enhance the moral fabric of Nigeria,” asserted Idris.
In response, Dr. James Lalu commended the Ministry for its commitment to disability rights advocacy and sought collaboration to raise awareness about the rights of persons with disabilities. He emphasized the importance of ensuring equal access for individuals with disabilities in public facilities, transportation, healthcare, and other services, as mandated by the Disability Law.
Dr. Lalu highlighted the untapped potential of persons with disabilities, stressing their diverse skills, qualifications, and abilities essential for the economic advancement of the country.
The announcement marks a significant step towards fostering inclusivity and championing the rights of persons with disabilities in Nigeria. With the establishment of the committee and unwavering support from the Ministry of Information and National Orientation, the nation moves closer to realizing its commitment to social equity and justice for all its citizens.
