In a move towards inclusive education, the Lagos State University (LASU) has garnered praise from the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) for establishing a dedicated Disability Support Unit, aimed at ensuring an inclusive learning environment for students with disabilities.
During a recent courtesy visit, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, the General Manager of LASODA, commended LASU’s proactive step in setting up the Disability Support Unit. Emphasizing the urgent need for educational institutions across the state to follow suit, she highlighted the importance of creating disability desks to foster the inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
Oyetunde-Lawal underscored the significance of inclusive policies, urging institutions to provide an enabling environment for students with disabilities. She emphasized that equal access and opportunities for all students, irrespective of their disabilities, are vital for creating a truly inclusive educational experience.
“I commend the Lagos State University for this initiative; it is a significant development with the overall objective of creating an inclusive learning environment where every student can thrive,” expressed Oyetunde-Lawal. She added that such initiatives would not only empower students with disabilities but also encourage parents to envision the possibilities of educating their children, thereby enhancing their lives.
Highlighting the prevalent accessibility issues faced by PWDs, Oyetunde-Lawal stressed the need for well-equipped resource centers, including Braille, Jus-enabled laptops, sign language instructors, magnifying glasses, ramps, and other tools to support students with various disabilities.
Ms. Afolami Arojojoye, the Deputy Registrar and leader of the LASU Disability Support Office team, emphasized the university’s commitment to upgrading the Disability Support Unit. Seeking collaboration and support from LASODA, she outlined the measures LASU has implemented to cater to the diverse needs of students with disabilities.
As LASODA reaffirms its dedication to advancing the cause of Persons with Disability, the agency expressed its readiness to refer, support, and partner with Lagos State University in fostering an inclusive educational environment.
