Kebbi to establish commission for PWDs

Kebbi State Government will establish a commission for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) to ensure an all-inclusive governance in the state.

Commissioner for Information and Culture, Yakubu Ahmed, said this, yesterday, in Birnin Kebbi, while briefing newsmen after the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting presided over by Governor Nasir Idris.

Ahmed said the decision to establish the commission was reached at the SEC meeting, where the council sent the bill to the legislature.

He said: “This came about as a result of a BBC Hausa programme, ‘A Fada a Cika‘ on January 1, 2024, where some PWDs complained directly to the governor that the decision was taken by many states and that it was a national matter approved by the National Assembly, and that most of the states have established the commission, while Kebbi is one of the few states that have not done so.

“After hearing the complaint from some PWDs during the programme, the governor directed the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General of the state to quickly prepare the bill and bring it to the council’s meeting for onward transmission to the House of Assembly for approval.”

The commissioner reiterated the governor’s commitment to ratifying the bill into law as soon as it is passed by the House of Assembly.

He announced that the governor also approved the holding of the yearly Regatta Cultural Festival of Yauri Emirate from February 7 to 10 this year.

“While submissions have been made for approval in view of time constraints, the governor has directed the immediate release of funds to the Emirate to start the preparations,” commissioner said.

He recalled that the Emir of Yauri, Dr Zayyanu Abdullahi, had earlier met with the governor and requested assistance to hold the Regatta, which the governor instantly approved.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the governor also approved the review of traditional rulers’ monthly allowances after a request was made by the emir.

This, he added, would enable them to perform their functions more patriotically and diligently.
