Kaduna Commissioner Rabi Salisu Fosters Stronger Ties with Journalists, PWDs to Promote Inclusion and End Gender-Based Violence

In a remarkable demonstration of commitment to social inclusion and advocacy, the Kaduna State Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development, Hajiya Rabi Salisu, has called for closer collaboration between journalists and the disability community to promote an inclusive society and combat gender-based violence.

She made this call while hosting a special combined Iftar (breaking of fast) for members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kaduna State Chapter, and the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) in Kaduna State. The unprecedented event, held at her residence, provided an interactive platform to strengthen partnerships and ensure better representation of disability issues in the media.

Promoting Inclusivity Through Dialogue

Addressing the gathering, Hajiya Rabi Salisu emphasized the need for collaborative efforts between the media and the disability community to foster inclusivity, ensure accurate representation of persons with disabilities (PWDs), and create awareness about their challenges and contributions to society.

“It is crucial to build strong relationships and partnerships between journalists and the disability community. This event promotes inclusivity and diversity, providing an opportunity for persons with disabilities to share their experiences and perspectives with journalists during this sacred period of Ramadan,” she said.

The Commissioner encouraged journalists to dedicate more effort to inclusive reporting, particularly on disability rights and accessibility issues, urging them to shape public perception positively and influence policies that uphold the dignity of PWDs.

A Government Committed to Inclusion

Hajiya Rabi Salisu expressed her gratitude to the administration of Governor Uba Sani for the unwavering support given to her ministry, which has allowed for impactful projects and policies aimed at enhancing the lives of PWDs and vulnerable groups in Kaduna State.

“The Uba Sani-led government has been incredibly supportive of our mandate, enabling us to actively implement policies that protect and empower persons with disabilities. This administration is committed to inclusivity and human development, and we are determined to continue championing these efforts,” she stated.

PWDs Hail the Unprecedented Gesture

Leader of the PWD community, Baba Musa, described the Iftar event as historic, being the first time that persons with disabilities were invited to break fast with high-ranking government officials in Kaduna State. He praised the Commissioner for her dedication to disability inclusion and for appointing a person with a disability as a Special Assistant, a decision that has resonated deeply within the community.

“This is a groundbreaking moment for us. Never before have we been honored in such a manner, and for that, we are truly grateful. Hajiya Rabi Salisu has made history, and we celebrate her for her unwavering support and commitment to our welfare. She has united us and made us feel valued. The entire disability community in Kaduna is proud of her leadership,” Musa remarked.

Journalists Affirm Support for Disability Advocacy

Speaking at the event, AbdulGafar Alabelewe, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kaduna State Council, commended the Commissioner for her long-standing dedication to humanitarian causes, even before her appointment. He noted that her involvement in community development through the Arida Foundation had earned her widespread respect among journalists.

“Hajiya Rabi Salisu is someone we have known for decades, long before she assumed this role as Commissioner. She has always been committed to helping humanity and contributing positively to society. Her appointment was well-deserved, and we are proud to associate with her vision,” Alabelewe stated.

He assured the Commissioner of the unwavering support of journalists in ensuring that the voices of PWDs are amplified and that Governor Uba Sani’s administration, which is committed to inclusivity, continues to receive positive engagement from the media.

“As progressives, we recognize the impact of Senator Uba Sani’s government across all developmental sectors in Kaduna State. We will continue to support this administration, your ministry, and the broader mission of inclusion,” he affirmed.

Alabelewe also expressed hope that Hajiya Rabi Salisu would, in the future, represent Kaduna State at the national level, given her dedication and contributions to social development.

A Call for Sustained Collaboration

The Iftar gathering concluded with goodwill messages from various dignitaries and journalists, all reinforcing the importance of promoting peace, harmony, and inclusivity in Kaduna State and Nigeria at large. Attendees underscored the significance of such engagements in bridging gaps, fostering understanding, and ensuring that disability issues receive the visibility they deserve.

As Kaduna State continues to champion policies that enhance the lives of vulnerable populations, events like this serve as a testament to the power of collaboration in building a society where no one is left behind. With the combined efforts of government, the media, and civil society, the vision of a more inclusive and equitable Nigeria is gradually becoming a reality.
