Include Us In Fuel Subsidy Palliative Distribution In Enugu State—Persons With Disability Tell Gov. Mba

Organizations of Persons With Disabilities In Enugu State under the auspices of Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD) Enugu State Chapter has called on Governor Ndubuisi Mba, Executive Governor of Enugu State to include them in the Fuel Subsidy Removal Palliative Distribution in Enugu State.

Rising from their State exco meeting held today in Enugu, the leading advocacy group for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the State expressed their sincere appreciation to both the State and Federal Government for the establishment of the Fuel Subsidy Palliative Committee and the allocation of funds to cushion the economic effects of recent fuel price increases.

“We acknowledge the efforts made by the government in recognizing the need to support vulnerable populations during challenging times”.

In a press statement signed by Comrade Onyebuchi Mba, State chairman, Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD), the group stated that the government goodwill should have been better appreciated if the Government of Hon. Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah includes the representative of persons with disabilities into his recently constituted palliative committee to demonstrate inclusiveness in line with the slogan that (NOTHING FOR US WITHOUT US).

“However, this is never too late, as we appeal to Enugu State Government to ensure the full inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities in the distribution of these palliatives. It is crucial to recognize that persons with disabilities are often the worst hit in any socioeconomic crisis.”

They reminded that their vulnerability extends beyond the need for palliatives and requires deliberate planning and comprehensive measures to address their unique needs and challenges.

“In Enugu State alone, there are over 200,000 persons with disabilities across the 17 local government areas. Many of them are struggling to have at least two square meals a day, let alone meet other essential needs. The social and economic impact of the recent fuel price increases has further exacerbated their plight, making it even more imperative to respond effectively and with empathy” they stated.

The group called on policymakers, religious organizations, philanthropists, and other stakeholders to show compassion and empathy for the predicaments faced by persons with disabilities in present-day Nigeria.

“It is vital that the voices and concerns of this marginalized group are heard and addressed properly in policy decisions and resource distribution” they added.

“We urge the Enugu State Government to collaborate with disability organizations and civil society organisations to ensure PWDs are not left out of the fuel subsidy palliative distribution”.

They believed that through inclusive decision-making and equitable distribution of resources, the sufferings of persons with disabilities can be alleviated, providing them with the opportunity for a better quality of life.

“Enugu State Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities stands ready to work with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the inclusion and empowerment of persons with disabilities in Enugu State”.

“Together, we can build a society that leaves no one behind”.
