Ability Plus Initiative in partnership with NTAK put together 2022 International Day of Persons with Disabilities Funfair for Children and Women with Disabilities @NTA on Dec 8 2022.
Janet Fasakin, the founder and CEO, AbilityPlus Initiative in her opening remark said that persons with disabilities face a lot of barriers and are discriminated against in several key areas; transportation,employment,education,as well as social and political participation.
Speaking further, she said that the observance of this Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
She dissected the theme of the year, saying that innovation and transformative solutions for inclusive development are covering in three different interactive dialogues, Innovation for disability inclusive development in employment (SDG8), this dialogue will discuss the linkages between employment, knowledge and skills required to access employment in an innovative, rapidly changing technological landscape to all and how assistive technologies can increase accessibility to employment and be mainstreamed in the workplace. Innovation for disability inclusive development in reducing inequality (SDG10), this dialogue will discuss innovations, practical tools and good practices to reduce inequalities in both public and private sectors, which are disability inclusive and interested in promoting diversity in the workplace.Innovation for disability inclusive development: sport as an exemplar case: a sector where all of these aspects coalesce; sport as a good practice example and a site of innovation, employment and equity. She wished Nigerians with Disabilites well as they celebrate this year’s international day for persons with disabilities and urged the leaders to see they can advocate more using the theme of the year.
The event witnessed present of some leaders in the Disability Community, Development Partner and Media organizations.
Some learning materials were given to some children with disabilities as AbilityPlus contribution towards encouraging children with disabilities to realize their dreams through education.
TQM learnt that the annual celebration of children and women with disabilities by AbilityPlus Initiative was supported this year notably by Sightsavers and GBM Global.
