House Of Reps Adopt Motion Calling On FG To Include PWDs In All Poverty Alleviation Programmes

The House of Representatives Committee Chairman On Disability, Hon. Dr. Bashiru Ayinla Dawodu has moved motion on the floor of the house of representatives calling on the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and State Governments to mainstream for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in every programme of the government.

Speaking while moving the motion on Thursday last week, The Committee Chairman said that it is disheartening that Federal Ministry Of Humanitarian Affairs And Poverty Alleviation didn’t include Persons With Disabilities in the recent Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund of $5 billion annually approved by Federal Executive Council (FFC).

“It is disturbing that the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation’s recently launched ‘Renewed Hope Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) without mainstreaming Persons With Disability violated Discrimination Against Persons With Disabilities Prohibition Act 2018.

Recalling that the program meant to transfer N1 trillion at N25, 000 each to 15 million households.He also said that it is also disturbing that most poverty alleviation programmes are not inclusive of persons with disabilities.

He called for the review of the National Social Register to accommodate persons with disabilities.

The House also called on the state and local governments to include persons with disabilities in every programme of the state and create standalone status for PWDs within the Programmes.

Hon. (Dr.) Bashiru Ayinla Dawodu who represents Oshodi/Isolo Federal Constituency 1, Lagos State also noted while presenting the motion that discrimination against persons with disabilities Act 2018 was assented into law by former President Muhammed Buhari in 2019.

And recently, on 19th October, 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the instrument of ratification of the protocol to the African charter on Human and People’s Rights on the Rights of Persons with Disability in Africa.

The House considered the motion as matter of public importance and national development and it was adopted after it was seconded and voice vote by Speaker, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, PhD.
