HalyHope, DNF Train CSOs, OPDs, Policymakers On Disability Inclusion And Equity

HalyHope Foundation in partnership with Dorothy Njemanze Foundation organized a One Day Training of CSOs, OPDs and Policy makers on DISABILITY INCLUSION AND GENDER EQUITY (DIGE).

The event was put together on Tuesday to commemorate this year’s World Mental Health Day, with the theme ‘making mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority.

It was funded by Hon. Justice Haruna Tsammani (JCA).

The group is looking to strength the capacity of Organizations that work around Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV), on the rights of PWDs especially Women and Girls with Disabilities (WGwDs), international instruments and local laws that seeks to protect the rights of persons with disabilities in Nigeria.

The Executive Director of HalyHope Foundation, Ms. Apolmida Haruna Tsammani in her welcome address said that it is important that the capacity of relevant stakeholders in SGBV. As the world commemorate Mental Health, it is pertinent that we look into one of the major causes of mental health with a view of enhance the capacity of the stakeholders in response to it.

She also said that it is important that stakeholders understand the context of SGBV against women with disabilities which the world have not given so much attention. Women with disabilities constitute one in five women worldwide, gender based violence is often compounded by disability-based discrimination, women with disabilities are up to three times greater risk of rape and other violence even from their members.

The workshop featured training sessions on Human Rights, global and country perspective, overview and access to justice by Olabanji, introduction to gender equality by Dorothy Njemanze, Introduction to disability and focus on specific disabilities by Ahmed Abdulkareem and contextual analysis of Sexual and Gender based Violence against women with disability taken by Agbo Christian Obiora.

Earlier at the event, the participants were taken through a YOGA session to keep fit.

TQM learnt that the participants who represented Organizations such as IFA, DWAI, AWWDI, CWEENS, DNF, DRAC, NDW, NAPTIP, WRAPA and TQM should step down the training to their colleagues.

The group also promised to further strengthen the capacity of any of the organizations on request.

It is important to bring to your notice that modification which has been a mirage in most government buildings, Dorothy Njemanze Foundation were able to modify their new office. They provide ramps in all the entrances and some rooms in their office.
