Nigeria’s Flora Ugwunwa has added another accolade to her illustrious career, winning a silver medal in the women’s Javelin F54 event at the ongoing Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Ugwunwa’s impressive throw of 19.26 meters earned her a second-place finish, making this Nigeria’s first medal in the women’s javelin category at the Paris games.
The gold medal went to Uzbekistan’s Nurkhon Kurbanova, who set a new world record with an extraordinary throw of 21.12 meters, while Iran’s Elham Salehi secured bronze with a throw of 16.24 meters.
Ugwunwa, at 40 years old, has continued her dominance in the sport, winning her third consecutive Paralympic medal. She previously won gold in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, now adding a silver in Paris to her growing list of achievements. Her remarkable consistency on the global stage has solidified her status as one of Nigeria’s most celebrated Paralympians.
This latest victory brings Nigeria’s total medal haul at the Paris Paralympics to four, following the successes of Onyinyechi Mark, Eniola Bolaji, and Esther Nworgu in their respective events. Ugwunwa’s performance further showcases the strength and resilience of Nigeria’s Paralympic team, as they continue to make their mark on the world stage.
The Nigerian contingent remains a force to be reckoned with, and the nation is eagerly awaiting more triumphs as the games progress.
