FG Approves 500% Budget Increase for Disability Commission

Abuja, Nigeria – In a groundbreaking move, the Federal Government has announced a substantial 500% increase in the 2024 budgetary allocation for the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD). This significant boost underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life and opportunities for People with Disabilities (PwDs) across the nation.

The commission’s Executive Secretary, Mr. James Lalu, shared this remarkable development during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday. Reflecting on the progress made during President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Lalu highlighted the deliberate and impactful measures taken to support the disability community.

A Renewed Hope for Inclusivity

“The administration of President Tinubu is truly committed to providing opportunities for People Living with Disabilities (PwDs),” Lalu stated emphatically. “The commission has continued to receive all the necessary support from the administration to ensure that PwDs are carried along.”

Lalu praised the president’s proactive approach since taking office on May 29, 2023. One of the administration’s first significant actions was the reactivation of the African Union Protocol on Disability. “The president did not waste time; he went ahead to sign the instrument, demonstrating Nigeria’s commitment towards improving the quality of lives of PwDs as part of an international treaty,” Lalu explained. “As I am talking to you, Nigeria is now a full-time member-state on issues of Disabilities regarding the African Protocol on Disability.”

Strategic Initiatives for Enhanced Accessibility

To further solidify the administration’s commitment, President Tinubu established the Office of the Special Assistant to the President on Disability Affairs. This office ensures that the voices and needs of PwDs are integral to governance. “Just recently, there was approval from the President for the full enforcement of the Accessibility Law,” Lalu noted.

This pivotal policy document sets standards for accessibility facilities in public buildings, all built environments, and transportation. “The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities is currently setting up all the structures required for the full enforcement of these accessibility regulations,” Lalu said. “This will empower the Commission to monitor compliance, seal buildings, and where necessary, invite erring parties or organizations.”

Under the newly approved law, the commission is authorized to investigate, prosecute, and sanction entities that violate accessibility regulations. This newfound authority was exemplified recently when the commission sanctioned a KFC outlet at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos for alleged discriminatory treatment of a Passenger with Reduced Mobility.

A Future of Empowerment and Equality

The 500% budget increase is not just a financial boost; it symbolizes a broader commitment to creating an inclusive and equitable society. The enhanced budget will facilitate various initiatives aimed at improving access to governance and services for PwDs. From infrastructural adjustments to educational programs and employment opportunities, the increased funding is set to make a tangible difference in the lives of millions.

President Tinubu’s administration, through its Renewed Hope initiative, is laying the groundwork for a future where disability does not equate to disadvantage. The deliberate actions taken, from signing international protocols to enforcing national laws, reflect a comprehensive strategy to uplift and empower the disability community.

Community Reactions and Future Prospects

The response from the disability community has been overwhelmingly positive. Advocacy groups and individuals alike have praised the government’s decisive actions. The increased budget allocation is seen as a beacon of hope, promising more resources for essential programs and services.

Looking ahead, the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities plans to roll out several initiatives funded by the increased budget. These include extensive awareness campaigns, training programs for public and private sectors on disability inclusion, and more stringent enforcement of accessibility standards across the country.

As Nigeria continues to champion the rights and opportunities for PwDs, the country sets an example for others to follow. The Federal Government’s bold steps are paving the way for a more inclusive society where every citizen, regardless of their physical abilities, can achieve their full potential.

In conclusion, the 500% budget increase for the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards inclusivity. Under President Tinubu’s administration, the commitment to supporting and empowering PwDs is clearer than ever, promising a brighter and more equitable future for all.
