Aba, Nigeria – July 23, 2024 — In the wake of recent tragic events, the Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD), a prominent pro-democracy and environmental rights organization based in Abia State, has issued a strong appeal to the state government to address the escalating insecurity in Aba and its environs. This call comes after the unfortunate killing of Inspector Shehu Oyibo and three others by unidentified assailants, as confirmed in an official statement from the police.
FENRAD expressed deep sorrow over these senseless killings, emphasizing the urgent need for a comprehensive review of the security measures in place across Abia State, particularly in the bustling city of Aba. The foundation has consistently advocated for enhanced security provisions, warning that the current situation could deter potential investors, despite ongoing infrastructure improvements in the region.
The organization’s leadership, led by Executive Director Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor and Head of Human Rights Enforcement & Litigation Barr. Femisi Akande, highlighted the critical need for the state government and security agencies to forge a robust partnership. They stressed that such collaboration is vital for developing and implementing effective strategies to combat the rising tide of violence. The killings, according to FENRAD, are not only tragic but also signal a broader, more dangerous trend that could undermine the state’s economic and social stability.
In previous statements, FENRAD had called for the deployment of advanced surveillance technologies, including digital monitoring tools, to strategic locations throughout Abia State. This recommendation remains a cornerstone of their current appeal, with the foundation questioning the allocation and utilization of security funds within the state. They called for a thorough investigation into the expenditure of these funds, particularly in light of a recent study by govern_well.org, which compared security spending across Abia, Anambra, and Lagos states.
The study revealed that from July 2023 to March 2024, Governor Alex Otti allocated N4.45 billion to security, a figure substantially higher than the N18 million spent by Anambra State Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo during the same period. Given that Anambra has a larger population and is often considered more volatile, FENRAD argues that the funds available in Abia should be more than sufficient to address the current security challenges.
The foundation urged the state government to thoroughly investigate the root causes of these violent incidents, including any potential political motivations. They stressed the importance of preemptive action to prevent other criminal groups from exploiting the current security vacuum. FENRAD called on Governor Otti to ensure that security votes are effectively utilized to safeguard the state’s residents and businesses.
Reflecting on past successes, such as the resolution of the security issues in the Lokpanta area, FENRAD expressed confidence in Governor Otti’s ability to restore peace and order in Aba and surrounding regions. They emphasized that with the proper allocation of resources, including the acquisition of surveillance equipment, it is feasible to transition Abia’s security landscape into the digital age, thus providing a more robust defense against criminal activities.
FENRAD’s urgent call for action comes at a critical time, as the growing insecurity threatens to derail the economic and social progress that Abia State has been striving to achieve. The foundation’s leaders highlighted the necessity of swift and decisive measures to reassure both residents and investors of their safety and the stability of the region.
In conclusion, FENRAD reiterated its commitment to advocating for the rights and safety of the people of Abia State. They urged Governor Otti and his administration to prioritize security, leveraging the available resources to implement comprehensive and effective measures. As the state grapples with these challenges, FENRAD remains hopeful that decisive action will be taken to restore peace and prevent further violence.
This situation underscores the broader need for vigilance and proactive governance in addressing security issues, ensuring that all residents can live and work in a safe and secure environment. The foundation’s appeal is not just a call to action for the government but also a rallying cry for the entire community to support efforts toward a more secure and prosperous Abia State.
