Enugu State, December 5, 2024 – In a powerful and inspiring statement, the Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD), Enugu State Chapter, joined the global community in commemorating this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). Observed annually on December 3rd, the day emphasizes promoting awareness, understanding, and advocacy for the rights of persons with disabilities.
The theme for 2024, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” resonates deeply with JONAPWD’s mission. It highlights the critical role persons with disabilities play in shaping a society that values inclusivity and sustainability, while also urging collective action from governments, organizations, and communities to prioritize disability rights and inclusion.
A Call for Leadership and Action
Comrade Onyebuchi Mba, Chairman of JONAPWD Enugu State Chapter, delivered a passionate address, reflecting on the importance of the day and the urgency of the theme.
“This theme challenges us all,” he said. “It is a call to governments to implement policies that protect and promote the rights of persons with disabilities, ensuring equal access to education, healthcare, employment, and social services. It also calls on organizations to adopt inclusive practices and foster a culture of accessibility and empowerment.”
Mba emphasized the vital role of communities in fostering awareness and acceptance, encouraging collective responsibility for building a world where persons with disabilities are not only included but empowered to lead. He also challenged persons with disabilities themselves to continue advocating for their rights and aspiring to leadership roles.
Celebrating Achievements Amid Challenges
While recognizing the progress made, JONAPWD did not shy away from highlighting the social, economic, and political challenges persons with disabilities continue to face in Enugu State. Despite these hurdles, the association reaffirmed its commitment to creating an inclusive and sustainable future.
“We are here to amplify disability issues, celebrate the resilience and achievements of persons with disabilities, and advocate for equal opportunities for all,” Mba added.
The association lauded the Enugu State government for its efforts in advancing disability inclusion, particularly the gazetting of the 2023 Enugu State Discrimination Against Persons With Disabilities Prohibition Law.
Government’s Role in Driving Inclusion
JONAPWD expressed its gratitude to key government officials, including Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development Hon. Mrs. Ngọzi Enih, and Attorney General Hon. Dr. Kingsley Ude, for their commitment to the rights of persons with disabilities.
The association also acknowledged various innovative projects initiated by the state government, such as the Smart Green Schools, Type 2 Primary Health Centers, and extensive road constructions, which have the potential to enhance accessibility for persons with disabilities.
However, the association made an urgent appeal to Governor Mbah to prioritize the establishment of a State Disability Commission as stipulated in the law. “The commission will play a crucial role in promoting disability rights and ensuring inclusivity within the framework of the governor’s disruptive innovation ideology,” Mba stated.
JONAPWD also urged the newly elected 17 local government chairpersons and 260 ward councilors to prioritize disability rights in their leadership, stressing that grassroots actions are vital for ensuring the inclusion of persons with disabilities in all facets of society.
Acknowledging Supporters and Advocates
The association took time to appreciate the unwavering support of its partners, civil society organizations, and media outlets, which have been instrumental in championing disability rights.
Special recognition was given to the First Lady of Enugu State, Her Excellency Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, for her unprecedented initiatives aimed at the economic empowerment of persons with disabilities. JONAPWD expressed heartfelt prayers for her continued health and strength, calling her a “motherly pillar of support.”
A Future of Inclusion and Sustainability
As the celebration continues, JONAPWD called on persons with disabilities in Enugu State to remain resolute and optimistic.
“Together, we can create a more inclusive and sustainable future,” Mba concluded. “Let’s unite to build a society where persons with disabilities are valued, respected, and empowered to lead.”
The message of hope and determination resonates far beyond Enugu State, reminding everyone that disability rights are human rights, and an inclusive future is one where everyone thrives.
