Enroll children with disabilities in Schools, Alawiye-King urges parents

The Executive Chairman, Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), Hon. Wahab Alawiye-King has urged parents and guardians keeping their wards with disabilities indoor to enroll them in schools, noting that special needs children are endowed with various potentials, which can only be realised through exposure to basic education.

Alawiye-King said: “In Lagos State, every child matters to us, every pupil counts. There is ability in disability. They are special and useful to us with their potentials and talents. I am proud to be associated with them.”

Speaking at event held to commemorate World Disability Day in Lagos, the SUBEB Chair added that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration is running an all-inclusive basic education, which is not only focusing on the cognitive domain, but also affective and psycho-motor aspect of learning.

SUBEB Board Member, Dr. Saheed Ibikunle appreciated the pupils and teachers for not letting down their flags, despite the challenges faced by them.

He stated that the theme ‘leadership participation of persons with disabilities towards an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 world’ was to promote an understanding of disability issues aside mobilizing support for the dignity and rights of persons with disabilities.

Mrs. Funmilayo Bank-Anthony, a Nollywood actress, stated that persons living with disabilities are special people that need to be cared for. She urged the society to respect evolving capacities of children with disabilities, with the right to preserve their identities.
