In a concerted effort to address the health disparities faced by young girls with albinism, the Women and Girls With Albinism Network (WGWAN) spearheaded a transformative one-day sensitization program on HIV. Led by the dynamic Executive Director, Miss Constance Nneka Oyemaechi, WGWAN collaborated with the Grassroot Initiative for Gender and Development (GRID) and Urgent Action Fund Africa to host this groundbreaking event at the illustrious Jasmine Hotel Abuja on Friday, April 4th, 2024.
The event garnered significant attention and support from key stakeholders, with notable figures gracing the occasion. Among the distinguished guests was the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Hon. Abba Isah, represented by the articulate Miss Ezinne Odika. Additionally, the Deputy Director / Head of GASHE Division, Family Health Department, Federal Ministry of Health, Mr. Sylvannus Welle, lent his expertise to the proceedings. The National Coordinator of the Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiative, represented by the passionate Miss Roseline Migbole, and the Executive Directors of Inclusive Voice for Women and Youths Initiative, Mrs. Jane Akpeva, further enriched the event with their presence.
At the heart of the program was the invaluable contribution of Mrs. Funmi Owoseni, a seasoned public health practitioner and research assistant with K&TC. With unwavering dedication and expertise, Mrs. Owoseni served as the facilitator, imparting vital knowledge on HIV to the eager participants. Through engaging discussions and interactive sessions, she delved into the intricacies of HIV, covering topics ranging from transmission and prevention to available treatments.
Crucially, Mrs. Owoseni took the opportunity to dispel prevalent myths surrounding HIV, particularly those perpetuated within the context of albinism. By challenging misconceptions and providing accurate information, she empowered the young girls with albinism to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.
In a proactive measure to promote health equity, the participants were equipped with home test kits at the conclusion of the program. Under the guidance of Mrs. Owoseni, they received comprehensive instruction on how to utilize the test kits effectively, enabling them to conduct HIV testing in the comfort of their homes. Moreover, they were educated on the appropriate steps to take upon receiving either positive or negative test results, ensuring that they are empowered to take charge of their health outcomes.
Through the collaborative efforts of WGWAN, GRID, Urgent Action Fund Africa, and esteemed stakeholders, the HIV sensitization program stands as a testament to the power of collective action in advancing the health and rights of marginalized communities. As the echoes of empowerment reverberate through the halls of Jasmine Hotel Abuja, the impact of this transformative initiative will resonate far beyond the confines of the event, fostering a future where every young girl with albinism can thrive with dignity and resilience.
