In a concerted effort to advance the rights of women and girls with disabilities and combat gender-based violence (GBV) in Ekiti State, a compelling advocacy initiative has been launched, urging the state government to ensure the inclusion of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the GBV management committee.
Led by Disability Not A Barrier Initiative (DINABI) Nigeria, funded by the Disability Rights Fund (DRF), the advocacy visit to the Special Adviser to the Ekiti state governor on Special Education and Social Inclusion, Hon. Princess Adetoun Funmilayo Agboola, highlighted the critical need for policy reform and accessible GBV response services.
Mr. Olajide Funso, Executive Director of DINABI Nigeria, emphasized the double discrimination faced by women and girls with disabilities, underscoring the urgent necessity for their inclusion in decision-making processes concerning GBV management. He lauded Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s strides towards disability inclusion in the state and called for Hon. Adetoun Agboola’s support in implementing recommendations outlined in the Policy Brief on GBV Coordinating Mechanism and Disability Perspective in Ekiti state.
Hon. Agboola expressed her commitment to fostering an inclusive society and affirmed her support for the inclusion of women with disabilities in the GBV management committee. Recognizing the importance of their voice at the decision-making table, she pledged to communicate the advocacy outcomes to the state government for prompt action.
Mrs. Bankole Gbemisola, JONAPWD Woman Leader in Ekiti State, emphasized the significance of this inclusion, stressing that it would not only empower women and girls with disabilities but also foster a safer and more just society for all.
The advocacy initiative aims to address the unique challenges faced by women and girls with disabilities in accessing justice and support services, ensuring their full participation in GBV prevention and response efforts.
By amplifying the voices of marginalized communities and advocating for their inclusion in policy-making processes, organizations like DINABI Nigeria and DRF are driving tangible progress towards a more equitable and inclusive society in Ekiti State.
The outcome of this advocacy effort holds the promise of significant strides in protecting the rights and dignity of women and girls with disabilities, paving the way for a future where every individual can thrive free from discrimination and violence.
Incorporating women with disabilities into the GBV management committee represents a crucial step towards building a more inclusive and supportive environment for all residents of Ekiti State, aligning with the government’s commitment to promoting gender equality and social inclusion.
Through collaborative efforts and sustained advocacy, Ekiti State is poised to set a powerful example of inclusive governance and transformative change, ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of justice and equality.
