Miss Comfort Paulinus is an indigene of Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria.
She is thirty-one years old (31) and Person with Albinism (PWA).
Owing to her nature as a person with (Albinism) – a genetically inherited disorder caused as a result of partial or complete absence of the pigment that gives the skin colour and coverage (melanin), Miss Comfort as well as every other PWA is not supposed to be exposed to the damaging effects of the UV rays of the sun.
However, consequent upon the harsh economic situation in the country which bites on every household, coupled with the disheartening amount of discrimination and segregation that is being meted out on PWA in Nigeria, Miss Comfort had had no choice other than to fend for herself in a bid to survive the scourge of hunger.
However, due to consistent exposure to sunlight (which basically is PWAs enemy), Miss Comfort developed skin cancer and had lived with it since 2019.
Unfortunately, the cancerous growth on her skin had since then, continued to spread uncontrollably all over her body (the ears, eyes and head). The situation has degenerated into a very critical one such that if she is not urgently being treated, chances are that we may lose her.
Miss Comfort Paulinus had since 2019 till date, undergone about four different skin cancer surgical operation.
At the fourth one which took place in November 2021 at Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Anambra State (NAUTH), the dermatologists in charge of her case referred her for radiotherapy and chemotherapy at University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu State (UNTH) but due to financial constraints, she has not been able to undergo the treatment.
As such, we do not want her to die just like other PWA who because of skin cancer disease had died in their prime.
