Dr. Christopher Nwanoro, an outspoken advocate for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), has issued a heartfelt appeal to the government, urging the provision of free healthcare and assistive devices to enable PWDs to lead dignified lives.
As the Chairman of the National Disability Empowerment Forum (NADEF), a prominent Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) dedicated to empowering PWDs, Dr. Nwanoro conveyed his message during a recent appearance at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja.
Addressing the audience, Dr. Nwanoro emphasized the importance of ensuring that PWDs have access to essential services such as free health insurance and educational scholarships up to university level, recognizing the significant barriers they face in securing employment opportunities.
“Inclusivity is paramount,” remarked Dr. Nwanoro, stressing the need for greater involvement of PWDs in government affairs to prevent feelings of exclusion and marginalization within the community.
He also issued a heartfelt plea to organizations, communities, and compassionate individuals to provide assistive devices to PWDs, enabling them to live independently and access opportunities for personal and professional growth.
“Technological advancements offer a ray of hope,” highlighted Dr. Nwanoro, citing the availability of gadgets and tools designed to assist individuals with disabilities in navigating their surroundings and fulfilling their needs with greater ease and independence.
Encouraging PWDs to embrace a mindset of high self-esteem, Dr. Nwanoro emphasized their inherent value and potential contributions to national development, urging society to recognize and harness their talents and abilities.
“For someone like me, the journey to education and self-realization was fraught with challenges,” reflected Dr. Nwanoro. “It is incumbent upon the government to ensure that others do not face the same arduous path. Free healthcare and resources are essential in leveling the playing field and enabling PWDs to thrive.”
Dr. Nwanoro’s impassioned plea underscores the urgent need for concerted efforts to address the systemic barriers and inequalities faced by PWDs in Nigeria. As the nation strives towards greater inclusivity and equity, the provision of free healthcare and resources for PWDs emerges as a critical step in ensuring their full participation and integration into society.
