Disability Advocate Applauds Federal Government, Urges Deeper Commitment to Inclusivity

In a heartfelt message that has struck a chord with stakeholders and the public alike, Mr. Chuma Emmanuel Onah, a prominent disability rights advocate, has praised the Federal Government of Nigeria for its unwavering commitment to fostering inclusion for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). His remarks came during the commemoration of this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), themed “Amplifying Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.”

The event, which took place in Abuja, showcased the government’s efforts in promoting disability inclusion and creating platforms for meaningful dialogue on challenges faced by PWDs. Mr. Onah hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for providing an enabling environment that ensured the success of the event, describing the administration’s commitment to inclusion as a beacon of hope.

A Restored Faith in Leadership

In his goodwill message, Mr. Onah commended President Tinubu for his visible support for persons with disabilities. He referred to the president’s actions as a “gesture that restores faith in humanity and reinforces the government’s dedication to fostering equity and inclusion.”

He particularly praised the administration for elevating the conversation on disability rights, ensuring that the voices of PWDs are not just heard but are amplified at the national level. “This year’s IDPD has been a monumental success, and it reflects the love and respect this administration holds for persons with disabilities,” Mr. Onah stated.

Recognition for Key Advocates and Stakeholders

The commemoration also served as a platform to spotlight the efforts of key players in the disability advocacy space. Mr. Onah extended special accolades to the Chief Hosts, including Hon. Muhammed Abba Isa, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, and Mr. Ayuba Gufwam, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD).

According to Mr. Onah, the leadership and dedication exhibited by these individuals have been instrumental in driving positive change for millions of Nigerians living with disabilities. “Their unwavering commitment to improving the lives of PWDs is commendable and deserves our collective appreciation,” he said.

Advocacy for Deeper Reforms

While celebrating the achievements of the current administration, Mr. Onah did not shy away from pushing for further reforms to enhance the well-being of persons with disabilities. In a passionate appeal, he called on President Tinubu to establish disability commissions at the state and local government levels, which he believes should be led by individuals living with disabilities.

“By empowering persons with disabilities to head these commissions, we ensure their voices are central to policy-making and implementation, which is critical for achieving true inclusion,” Mr. Onah emphasized.

He further highlighted the urgent need for increased funding for disability-related projects. “The budget allocated to the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities must reflect the magnitude of the challenges faced by PWDs in Nigeria,” he argued. “Adequate funding is not just a necessity; it is a moral obligation if we are to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and leave no one behind.”

A Call for Collective Action

As one of the key participants in this year’s IDPD celebration, Mr. Onah used the platform to remind Nigerians of the collective responsibility required to build an inclusive society. He stressed that true leadership lies in amplifying the voices of the underrepresented and ensuring that every citizen, regardless of their abilities, has equal opportunities to thrive.

“The commemoration of the IDPD is not just a celebration; it is a call to action for all stakeholders—government, private sector, and civil society—to work collaboratively in breaking barriers and creating a society where diversity is celebrated,” Mr. Onah noted.

A Future of Hope for Inclusion in Nigeria

The goodwill messages and proactive measures advocated during the IDPD celebration offer a glimpse of hope for a more inclusive Nigeria. Stakeholders, including Mr. Onah, believe that the federal government’s actions and the ongoing dialogue on disability rights mark a turning point in the nation’s journey toward equity.

As the nation reflects on the strides made, Mr. Onah’s advocacy serves as a powerful reminder of the work that remains. His message challenges policymakers and citizens alike to prioritize the rights and potential of persons with disabilities, ensuring that their contributions are recognized and celebrated.

In the words of Mr. Onah, “An inclusive Nigeria is not just a dream; it is a responsibility we must all share. Together, we can amplify the leadership of persons with disabilities and build a future that leaves no one behind.”

The IDPD celebration has set the stage for sustained conversations and actions aimed at addressing the systemic challenges faced by PWDs. For many, the event was more than a commemoration; it was a rallying cry for inclusion, equity, and justice.
