In the aftermath of the commemoration of the International Day of Persons With Disabilities which happened recently Worldwide, the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Persons With Disabilities, Dr. James David Lalu has underpinned the position of the Discrimination Against Persons With Disabilities 2018 (Prohibition) act.
This was made known at the roundtable discussion organized by TAF Africa at the European Union House in Abuja, today 14th December, 2023.
During his speech, Lalu said that the law against the discrimination of Persons with Disabilities has gone beyond a period of awareness and advocacy and is now ready for a full implementation, starting from January, 2024.
“I am pleased to announce to you that we have metamorphosed from the stage of advocacy into implementation and enforcement of the disability law”
The ES, however, mentioned that the 5 year moratorium period has elapsed and that it is time to ensure total compliance.
He further hinted that there will be a Task team which will be comprised of the officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corp (NSCDC) and the Commission’s legal team who will prosecute defaulters.
The Commission’s helmsman equally seized the occasion to appreciate the efforts of TAF Africa over the years and for bringing the European Union close to the disability community.
Dr. Lalu also urged the EU to increase its funding for a wider visibility and participations of Persons With Disabilities in National issues.
Earlier in his address, the Founder and CEO TAF Africa , Dr. Jake Ekpelle highlighted the role of TAF Africa in setting Agenda for inclusivity among civil society groups in Nigeria.
“TAF Africa is using a twin-track approach for project executions in Nigeria which is funded by the EU” he said.
Nevertheless, the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, Samola Esope who was apparently impressed by the Federal government’s commitments towards advancing the course of Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria, promising to continue to champion disability inclusion in Nigeria.
Samola as well described the passion of both the Executive and the Legislature Arms of government in Nigeria as unprecedented, especially with the new Administration.
