DAI Urges Armed Forces Radio To Implement Disability Act

Disability Advancement Initiative (DAI) has urged Armed Forces Radio Broadcasting Station, Mogadishu Cantonment, Asokoro, Abuja to implement Discrimination Against Persons With Disabilities (Prohibition Act) 2018.

The Executive Director, DAI, Obinna Ekujereonye made the call on Friday 22nd September, 2023 during an Advocacy visit to the Radio Station.

The visit is part of DAI activity supported by The Leprosy Mission Nigeria (TLMN) to asertain the level of compliance of implementation of National Disability Act and the journey so far.

Mr. Obinna while outlining the purpose of their visit stated that the need for social inclusion that cuts across all challenges such as societal discrimination, inaccessibility of public infrastructures, barriers in communications for the deaf, blind and unawareness of the Disability Act that is accessible online and also on 5% employment opportunity for PWDs.

He emphasized on the inaccessibility of the stairs and partway leading to the entrance and other platforms, urging the station to ensure the provision and also create awareness to popularize the Act.


The officer on sit, Navy Commander ED Yeibo in his response, took note of all the demands made by DAI team. He informed the group that as a station, they are aware of the Act and their involvement is not far-fetched giving that they are creating awareness through their platform as a PWD is anchoring a program twice a week through their
platform.

He expressed his regret on the inaccessible partway, recounts on the need to modify on the ramp and the right specification to serve every need as the team recommended.

He further explained that most job recruitment in the armed forces is based on physical strength and capabilities which automatically limits the
performance of PWDs in the force.


At the end, he promised to relay the visit and the demands to his superiors for further deliberation.
