The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD), with support from the International Climate Initiative (IKI), has taken the lead in advancing disability-inclusive climate governance with a high-level validation meeting held in Lagos on February 20, 2026.
The meeting brought together key stakeholders from government MDAs, civil society, Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), and emergency/security agencies to review and validate findings from the study Enhancing Disability-Inclusive Climate Action in Nigeria.
Designed to bridge policy gaps between climate action and disability inclusion, the session focused on confirming Lagos-specific data, identifying gaps, strengthening evidence, and building stakeholder ownership of inclusive solutions.
Goodwill messages from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD Lagos), the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) reaffirmed institutional commitment to inclusive climate action and collaboration.
The research, conducted across Abia, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, and FCT Abuja between October and November 2025, highlighted critical gaps and proposed practical recommendations, including inclusive climate policies, mainstreaming climate resilience into disability and disaster laws, climate awareness for PWDs, simplified policy communication, and the establishment of disability desk officers across MDAs.
By convening this validation meeting, CCD has strengthened collaboration, reinforced the evidence base, and amplified the urgency of disability-inclusive climate action in Lagos State and across Nigeria.
