Advocacy For Women With Disabilities Initiative (AWWDI) On Thursday launched Skill Acquisition Centre at Karmajiji Disability Colony.
The Acting National Coordinator, Yakubu Bilikisu while declaring open to the public informed that the skill acquisition centre was supported by UNFPA to empower PWDs and most especially women and girls with disabilities in Karimajiji, FCT Nigeria.
Speaking further she said that the gathering was to create a history and change the narratives, giving hopes and ensuring economic empowerment and stability amongst persons with disability in FCT and to also celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and 16 days of activism.
“This year’s theme: United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGS for, with and by persons with disabilities.
She said that it resonates with the event which is the launch of vocational centre in Karonmajigi.
She expressed gratitude to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for their unwavering support and commitment to persons with disabilities.
“We are immensely grateful for their efforts in enabling a more inclusive and empowered society for persons with disabilities must especially women with disabilities around Nigeria”.
She also said that “The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated annually on December 3rd, aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities, while also acknowledging their contributions to the society”.
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities also provides an opportunity to celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements of persons with disabilities globally.
“Today, we reiterate our commitment to creating a world in which every individual, regardless of their abilities, can thrive and participate fully in all aspects of life” she added.
Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiatives (AWWDI) is an organization of persons with disabilities at the forefront of the fight for the well-being and empowerment of women with disabilities.
They have working tirelessly advocating with great initiatives to pave the way for crucial changes in policies, services, and societal attitudes towards women and girls with disabilities.
The launch of the Vocational Training Centre is in line with AWWDI’s commitment to inclusivity and empowerment,
The group called upon all stakeholders to work together to implement the African Union (AU) disability protocol, this landmark protocol, adopted by the AU in 2018, and was rectify by President Ahmed Bola Tinubu in Nigeria in the month of October, seeks to promote and protect the rights of persons with disabilities across the continent. By focusing on key areas such as accessibility, equality, and social integration, the implementation of the AU disability protocol will ensure that individuals with disabilities enjoy a life of dignity and respect.
“Let us unite and work towards implementing the AU disability protocol, creating a world that upholds and values the rights of all individuals, regardless of their abilities”.
