The Chairman and CEO of Anambra State Disability Rights Commission(DRC), Barrister Chuks Ezewuzie has on his first day as the Chairman of DRC took his staff on accessibility features of public buildings in Awka.
In a surprise visit to Everyday Supermarket, a new shopping mall that came into Awka late last year, Barr Ezewuzie affirmed that DRC was established to ensure that all the provisions of the Anambra State Disability Rights Law is been implemented in the state .
Taking a tour round the mall, Barr Chuks Ezewuzie informed the management that the entrance needed a good ramp to enable wheelchair users gain entrance into the facility. He also noted that though the mall has a good escalator, installation of a lift/elevator will provide additional accessibility especially up to the second floor. He appreciated the management for the ramp that connects the first floor and also pointed out that wheelchair users can not access the other floors.
Responding to the findings the manager explained that persons with disabilities can make due of the facilities on the first floor for the meantime and promise that the firm will make necessary amendments.
In a quick reaction the Commissioner in charge of Cluster Services in the DRC and an Executive Assistant to the Governor On Disability Services, Hon Ugochukwu Ernest Okeke commended the management for the proper inscription of all the sections and noted this will help the Deaf to navigate their ways.In another note,the Public Relation Officer and Head of Media in DRC, Miss Chidimma Ajemba notified that the ramp leading to the first floor is too sloppy and suggested that a second handrail be installed.
She also emphasized that the construction of a lift will further ease movement through the floors of the mall.(DRC)
