(ASDRC) The chairman and CEO of the Anambra State Disability Rights Commission, Bar Chukwuka Ezewuzie has called on educational policymakers in the state to include sign language in the school curriculum.
Bar Ezewuzie said this during the launching of Inclusive Sexual Health (DISH) by Deaf Women Aloud Initiatives in Awka.
He noted that communication problems experienced by the deaf community is a temporal ones that can be addressed if sign language is seen as an official language, aught to known by everyone.”
Sign Language should be introduced in all primary and secondary school curricula, as this will tackle the communication problem experienced by the deaf community.
“He appreciated DWAI for choosing Anambra to execute such a program and noted that the Disability Rights Commission is always open to such inclusive partnership”.
In his remark, Comrade Ugochukwu Okeke, the commissioner in charge of cluster services in the commission pointed out the need for government to employ sign language interpreters in all general hospitals in the state as this will help to put a stop to communication barriers experienced by Deaf Community when accessing health facilities in the state, especially women.
