ALDIN Applauds Governor Mbah’s Commitment to Establish Disability Rights Commission in Enugu State

A Pioneering Step Toward Inclusive Governance and Equal Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities

The Association of Lawyers with Disabilities in Nigeria (ALDIN) has commended the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for his resolute commitment to establishing a Disability Rights Commission in the state. Speaking through its National President, Ikem U. Uchegbulam Esq., ALDIN hailed this move as a groundbreaking initiative that underscores Governor Mbah’s dedication to inclusive governance and equitable opportunities for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The announcement, which comes as part of Governor Mbah’s broader vision for social inclusion, has been described by ALDIN as a pivotal moment in the fight for the rights, welfare, and integration of PWDs in Enugu State. The association emphasized that the proposed commission would mark a new era of progress and accountability, addressing long-standing challenges faced by the disability community.

Building on a Strong Foundation

ALDIN has been at the forefront of advocating for the rights of PWDs, particularly in the passage of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Law, which was signed into law by former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on April 23, 2023. This landmark legislation laid the groundwork for protecting the rights of PWDs in Enugu State, prohibiting discrimination and mandating equal opportunities in employment, education, and public spaces.

Governor Mbah’s commitment to establishing a Disability Rights Commission is seen as a bold step to build on this legacy. The commission is expected to create a robust framework for implementing the provisions of the law, ensuring that the rights of PWDs are not only recognized but also upheld in practice.

“Governor Mbah’s unwavering dedication to this cause is both commendable and inspiring. His initiative to establish a Disability Rights Commission signals a brighter future for persons with disabilities in Enugu State,” said Ikem U. Uchegbulam Esq., ALDIN’s National President.

A Comprehensive Framework for Inclusion

The Disability Rights Commission is envisioned as a transformative institution that will address systemic issues affecting PWDs, including stigma, discrimination, and social exclusion. Through advocacy, policy development, and resource allocation, the commission will serve as a catalyst for promoting the rights and welfare of PWDs in Enugu State.

ALDIN highlighted several key areas the commission is expected to focus on:

  • Accessibility and Infrastructure: Ensuring public buildings, roads, and facilities are equipped with disability-friendly features.
  • Economic Empowerment: Creating employment opportunities and supporting PWDs in accessing government intervention programs.
  • Advocacy and Awareness: Combating stigma and discrimination through education and public campaigns.
  • Representation: Guaranteeing that PWDs have a voice in decision-making processes at all levels of governance.

“This commission will be instrumental in fostering a more inclusive society where persons with disabilities can live with dignity, access opportunities, and contribute meaningfully to the development of Enugu State,” Uchegbulam remarked.

Call for Disability Representation in Leadership

ALDIN has also called on Governor Mbah to prioritize appointing persons with disabilities to key positions within the Disability Rights Commission and other government agencies. According to the association, representation is crucial to ensuring that policies and programs are informed by lived experiences and address the unique needs of the disability community.

“It is essential that individuals with disabilities are appointed to leadership roles. As the saying goes, ‘he who wears the shoe knows where it pinches.’ Their involvement will ensure that the commission’s work is effective and impactful,” Uchegbulam added.

This call aligns with global advocacy efforts, including the United Nations’ emphasis on amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities in achieving an inclusive and sustainable future.

A Model for Inclusive Governance

ALDIN believes that Enugu State has the potential to become a model for disability-inclusive governance in Nigeria. By taking decisive action to establish the Disability Rights Commission, the state is setting a benchmark for other states to emulate in advancing disability rights and fostering social inclusion.

The association pledged its full support for the establishment of the commission and expressed its readiness to collaborate with the state government in achieving this vision.

“Through Governor Mbah’s visionary leadership, Enugu State is poised to lead the way in creating a society where everyone, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to thrive. This is a legacy that will resonate for generations to come,” Uchegbulam affirmed.

Gratitude and Optimism

In its statement, ALDIN expressed deep gratitude to Governor Mbah for his commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities. The association also acknowledged the contributions of the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Hon. Ngozi Enih, whose tireless efforts have been instrumental in advancing disability inclusion in the state.

“This initiative is not just about governance—it’s about humanity, equity, and justice. We commend Governor Mbah and his team for their dedication to creating a more inclusive Enugu State,” said Justice Christopher, ALDIN’s Director of Media and Publicity.

Looking Ahead

As the disability community and advocates across Nigeria await the establishment of the Disability Rights Commission, there is renewed hope and optimism for a future where the rights of PWDs are fully recognized and upheld. ALDIN’s statement reflects the growing momentum for change and the collective resolve to build a society that leaves no one behind.

With Governor Mbah’s leadership and the unwavering support of stakeholders like ALDIN, Enugu State is charting a bold course toward a more inclusive and equitable future for all its citizens.
