“RideWithKanye”: Mother of Guinness World Record Autistic Cyclist Urges Parents to Discover Hidden Talents in Their Children

In a powerful blend of resilience, advocacy, and inspiration, Dr. Silvia Okeke, mother of 16-year-old Guinness World Record autistic cyclist, Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke, has called on parents of children with autism to reject neglect and instead uncover and nurture the unique abilities within their children.

Her message comes as her son embarks on a bold and symbolic journey across Nigeria—his second Guinness World Record cycling attempt—aimed at promoting awareness, inclusion, and acceptance for individuals living with autism.

Tagged “RideWithKanye,” the long-distance cycling campaign is more than a physical challenge; it is a national movement designed to reshape public perception about autism. The ride, which began in Enugu, is expected to conclude in Lagos on April 2, 2026, aligning with the global commemoration of World Autism Awareness Day.

A Journey Beyond Limits

Kanyeyachukwu’s journey has already captured national attention. In one remarkable stretch, the teenager cycled from Enugu to Anambra State in just three hours and 40 minutes—a feat that underscores not only his physical endurance but his unwavering determination.

Upon arrival at his hometown, Amichi in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, he was greeted with a grand and emotional reception. Family members, community leaders, supporters, and well-wishers gathered to celebrate a young man whose story is redefining possibilities for persons with autism in Nigeria.

He was accompanied by his parents, members of the Kanyeyachukwu Autism Foundation, cycling officials, and a dedicated medical support team—reflecting the scale and seriousness of the initiative.

A Mother’s Faith, A Child’s Purpose

Speaking during the reception, Dr. Silvia Okeke shared the deeply personal journey that led to her son’s rise as a global symbol of hope.

According to her, Kanyeyachukwu’s early years were marked by uncertainty. Diagnosed with autism after showing delayed speech development, the family faced the daunting reality that many parents of autistic children encounter.

Yet, rather than giving in to despair, they chose discovery.

“It all started when he was born. He wasn’t talking and was diagnosed with autism. We started looking for solutions, but God was faithful. That was when we discovered his talent in painting,” she recounted.

From as early as three years old, Kanyeyachukwu began expressing himself through art—eventually creating the largest artistic painting at the time. By age five, he had fully embraced painting, a passion that would take his work across more than 17 countries worldwide.

Today, he stands not only as a Guinness World Record holder but as a multidimensional talent—an artist, cyclist, and global advocate for autism awareness.

“Nobody is Useless”

Dr. Okeke’s message to parents was clear, emotional, and urgent.

“I encourage parents with autistic children not to neglect them, but to meticulously find out what their child is good at. Nobody is useless,” she said.

Her words cut through the stigma and misconceptions that often surround autism, particularly in many African societies where children with developmental conditions are frequently misunderstood, hidden, or abandoned.

She stressed that autism does not define a child’s worth or limit their potential.

“Even though they can’t talk, we can’t just throw them away. We need to tell the world what autism is all about—not just because of my son, but for other children out there,” she added.

Cycling for Inclusion and Impact

Beyond awareness, the “RideWithKanye” initiative is also anchored in tangible impact. The cycling project is a collaboration between the Cycling Federation of Nigeria and the Kanyeyachukwu Autism Society Foundation.

Its core objective is to raise funds to train over 1,000 caregivers who will provide specialized support for children with autism across Nigeria.

This focus on capacity building reflects a growing recognition that inclusion goes beyond advocacy—it requires investment in people, systems, and support structures.

Redefining the Narrative

Kanyeyachukwu’s story is not just about breaking records—it is about breaking barriers.

In a society where disability is often associated with limitation, his journey offers a counter-narrative—one that celebrates ability, resilience, and possibility.

As he continues his ride toward Lagos, each pedal stroke carries a message: that with the right support, belief, and opportunity, children with autism—and indeed all persons with disabilities—can thrive, excel, and inspire the world.

For many families watching across Nigeria and beyond, “RideWithKanye” is more than a campaign. It is a call to action, a message of hope, and a reminder that within every child lies a potential waiting to be discovered.
