AAP Inducts First-Ever Certified Accessibility Specialists, Signals New Era for Inclusive Infrastructure in Nigeria

Abuja, Nigeria — March 18, 2026

Nigeria has taken a bold step toward bridging the long-standing gap between disability laws and real-world implementation, as the Association of Accessibility Professionals (AAP) officially graduated and inducted its first cohort of Certified Accessibility Specialists in a landmark ceremony held in Abuja on Tuesday.

The historic event, which doubled as a Symposium and Convocation Ceremony, drew together emerging accessibility professionals, policymakers, regulators, private sector players, and members of the disability community from across the country. It marked not just the end of an intensive training programme, but the beginning of a new professional movement aimed at transforming Nigeria’s accessibility landscape.

A New Professional Force for Inclusion

The newly inducted specialists underwent a rigorous, largely hybrid training programme that combined theoretical learning with hands-on practical sessions, including real-time assessments of buildings and infrastructure. Their certification spans critical areas of accessibility practice, including:

  • Inclusive Design and Accessibility Auditing
  • Transport and Mobility Systems
  • Web and Digital Accessibility
  • Architecture and Building Plan Accessibility Review

These graduates now form Nigeria’s first structured pool of trained experts equipped to translate accessibility laws into measurable outcomes.

“A Celebration and a Call to Action” — Board Chairman

Delivering a powerful keynote, the Board Chairman of AAP, Yusuf Iyodo, described the moment as both symbolic and urgent.

“This is a celebration of progress, resilience, and the emergence of professionals who will drive accessibility in Nigeria,” he said. “But it is also a call to action—because much work remains.”

Speaking from personal experience, Iyodo recounted the realities of navigating inaccessible environments, emphasizing that exclusion is not abstract but deeply human.

“Buildings that shut people out, transport systems that fail users—these are not just structural issues; they are barriers to dignity and opportunity,” he noted.

He stressed that while Nigeria has made commendable progress with disability laws, the real challenge lies in technical execution.

“Accessibility requires expertise. It requires professionals who understand standards, can conduct audits, and ensure compliance. That is the gap AAP was established to fill.”

From Policy to Practice: AAP President Sounds the Charge

In a compelling presentation, the National President of AAP, Dapo Taiwo, described the induction as a “national statement” that Nigeria is ready to confront exclusion with competence and accountability.

“For years, we have had laws without implementation, policies without measurable outcomes, and commitments without enforcement,” Taiwo said. “The missing link has always been technical capacity.”

He emphasized that accessibility is not guesswork but a discipline requiring precision, standards, and systems thinking.

Addressing the graduating professionals, he issued a strong charge:

“This certification is not a reward—it is a responsibility. You are now custodians of a national obligation.”

He urged them to uphold integrity, reject substandard practices, and serve as technical advocates for inclusion.

A Direct Call to Government and Regulators

In a notable highlight, Taiwo called on key regulatory bodies—including the Corporate Affairs Commission, Bureau of Public Procurement, Nigerian Communications Commission, and development control agencies—to institutionalize accessibility compliance.

He advocated for:

  • Mandatory Accessibility Compliance Certification
  • Integration of accessibility into procurement and licensing processes
  • Periodic accessibility audits for public institutions
  • Engagement of certified professionals for compliance verification

“The era of voluntary compliance must give way to structured enforcement,” he declared.

Private Sector Urged to Act

Beyond government, AAP challenged private sector actors to view accessibility not as a cost but as a strategic investment.

“An accessible environment expands market reach, strengthens brand integrity, reduces legal risks, and enhances user experience,” Taiwo noted. “The question is no longer whether to act, but how soon.”

Voices from the New Professionals

For many of the newly certified specialists, the programme represents both empowerment and purpose.

One of the beneficiaries, Cosmas Ohaka, expressed optimism about the impact of the training.

“The skills we have acquired will enable us to engage government effectively and push for accessibility compliance. This is how we build an inclusive society,” he said.

Another graduate, Onitiju Kehinde, highlighted the widespread accessibility gaps across Nigeria.

“Most public buildings are still not accessible. This training has opened our eyes, and now is the time to engage and ensure change,” he said.

From Compliance to Culture

The event also featured the Native Accessibility Symposium themed “From Compliance to Culture: Institutionalising Accessibility in Nigeria,” reinforcing the need to move beyond policy into practice and societal mindset shifts.

A Turning Point for Nigeria

As the ceremony concluded, one message resonated clearly: accessibility in Nigeria can no longer remain optional.

With the induction of this first cadre of certified professionals, AAP has effectively laid the foundation for a technical ecosystem capable of driving enforcement, improving infrastructure, and ensuring that inclusion becomes a lived reality for millions of Nigerians with disabilities.

The challenge now lies in collective action.

From government to private sector, from regulators to developers—the tools, expertise, and momentum are finally in place.

Nigeria’s journey from exclusion to inclusion may have just found its strongest catalyst yet.
