In a bold move that underscores his commitment to inclusivity and human capital development, the Executive Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Engr. Jude Chinedu Asogwa, KSJI, has appointed Hon. Orurua Peter Obinna, an individual with a disability, as his Special Assistant on Disability Matters.
The historic appointment was announced during a brief but impactful ceremony at the council secretariat where Engr. Asogwa handed over the appointment letter to Hon. Obinna. The Chairman described the appointment as a deliberate step to give persons with disabilities (PWDs) a seat at the decision-making table and ensure their voices are heard in governance.
Speaking at the event, Engr. Asogwa congratulated Hon. Obinna, assuring him that his role would go beyond symbolism. He charged him to serve as his “eyes and ears” in matters affecting persons with disabilities across Nsukka. According to the Chairman, disability should not be seen as a limitation but as a different expression of ability.
“There is ability in every disability,” Engr. Asogwa declared. “This administration believes in inclusion, empowerment, and fairness for all. Today’s appointment is not an act of charity but a recognition of competence and representation. My government has concluded plans to roll out empowerment programs specifically targeted at PWDs, and we have committed ₦500,000 monthly to sustain these initiatives.”
The appointment of Hon. Obinna signals a new era of inclusive governance in Nsukka, setting an example that leadership should be reflective of every segment of society. The visibly elated appointee pledged loyalty to the Chairman and promised to serve as a true advocate for the disability community, ensuring that their needs, rights, and aspirations are consistently brought to the fore.
Beyond Hon. Obinna’s appointment, Engr. Asogwa also unveiled other new cabinet members who will support his administration’s agenda of quality leadership and grassroots development. Among them are:
- Hon. Ugwuja Candidus Afamefuna, from Agbamere/Umabor Ward, appointed as Special Assistant on Youth Mobilization.
- Hon. Denis Chizoba Odo, from Eha Ndiagu Ward, appointed as Special Assistant on Inter/Intra-Party Relationships.
- Mrs. Anthonia Okwor, appointed as Special Assistant on Administration.
These appointments, the Chairman noted, reflect a deliberate balance of inclusivity, competence, and representational equity aimed at ensuring no community or demographic is left behind in the governance process.
Observers have praised Engr. Asogwa’s administration for prioritizing human capital development and promoting a governance style that values people over politics. Civil society groups and disability rights advocates have also commended the decision, describing it as a progressive step that aligns with Nigeria’s Disability Act and global best practices on inclusive leadership.
The Nsukka Local Government Chairman’s move has now set a benchmark for other local governments across Nigeria, proving that inclusive leadership is not just possible but necessary for sustainable development.
With Hon. Orurua Peter Obinna’s appointment, Nsukka joins the growing list of councils championing the rights of persons with disabilities, giving them not just recognition but active participation in shaping policies that affect their lives.
