The National Commission for Persons With Disabilities (NCPWD), led by Executive Secretary Chief Ayuba Gufwan, has intensified efforts to secure a disability-inclusive salary structure. In a strategic move following recent engagements with the National Assembly, Gufwan took the advocacy to the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC) headquarters in Abuja.
During the meeting, Gufwan emphasized the Commission’s mission to uplift over 35 million Nigerians living with disabilities, stating that failure is not an option. Since its establishment in 2020, the Commission has been working tirelessly to address the needs of this population despite limited financial resources. However, he stressed that the absence of disability allowances and insufficient budgetary provisions have hampered the expansion of regional offices and constrained the delivery of essential services.
Renewing Hope for PWDs under Tinubu’s Administration
Gufwan expressed appreciation for his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, viewing it as a sign of renewed hope that the government stands firmly with Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). He emphasized that supporting the livelihoods of PWDs requires additional financial commitments, which must be reflected in their salary structure.
“Whenever a person with a disability takes on a task, there is always a need to budget for guides, assistants, or sign language interpreters to ensure the task is accomplished,” he explained.
Gufwan noted that upscaling salaries for PWDs is essential given Nigeria’s current economic realities.
Commitment Amid Accessibility Challenges
Despite the challenges posed by inaccessible office infrastructure at the NSIWC headquarters, Gufwan commended the Commission’s staff for their dedication to the cause. He expressed optimism that the ongoing discussions would result in tangible improvements for PWDs.
In response, the Acting Secretary of the NSIWC, Mr. Chiadi Adighiogu, apologized for the inconvenience caused by the lack of accessibility to the premises. He reassured the NCPWD team of the Federal Government’s commitment to review the salary structure for Persons with Disabilities.
“We are awaiting feedback from the Presidency on the salary review request,” Adighiogu stated. “Once the approval is granted, we will immediately convey the outcome to the NCPWD.”
Paving the Way for an Inclusive Future
The meeting between the NCPWD and the NSIWC marks another significant step toward securing financial equity for PWDs. With the Federal Government poised to review the salary structure, expectations are high for enhanced allowances and structural adjustments that will ease the burden on PWDs and promote economic sustainability.
The NCPWD’s advocacy efforts continue to highlight the importance of inclusive governance and social justice, ensuring that PWDs are not left behind as Nigeria navigates challenging economic times.
As the nation awaits the Presidency’s decision, Gufwan and his team remain committed to advancing the rights of Persons with Disabilities, confident that their efforts will yield lasting change.
