AWWDI Hosts Influential Round Table on Climate and Disability-Inclusive Policy

In a significant stride towards integrating disability considerations into climate action, the Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiative (AWWDI) held a pivotal Round Table Engagement at Barcelona Hotels International on August 22nd, 2024. The event drew attention to the urgent need for inclusive climate policies, particularly addressing the unique challenges faced by women with disabilities in the face of climate change.

The Round Table Engagement was attended by key stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), rights holders, and advocates for disability inclusion. The focus was clear: to foster dialogue, collaboration, and action towards embedding disability considerations within the broader climate policy framework.

Keynote Address: A Call for Inclusive Climate Policies

The session opened with a compelling keynote address delivered by the Program Manager of AWWDI, who highlighted the intersection between climate change and the rights of women with disabilities. He stressed that while climate change is a global crisis affecting millions, its impacts are disproportionately felt by vulnerable groups, particularly women with disabilities.

He underscored the urgent need for climate policies that are not only comprehensive but also equitable, ensuring that the voices and needs of women with disabilities are adequately represented. The Program Manager emphasized that the integration of disability considerations into climate action is not merely an option but a necessity for achieving true inclusivity and justice.

“The challenges faced by women with disabilities in the context of climate change are multifaceted and deeply rooted in systemic inequalities,” he stated. “We must engage with key stakeholders, especially the Ministry of Environment, to ensure that our policies are not only responsive to the broader impacts of climate change but also tailored to address the specific vulnerabilities of women with disabilities.”

A Call to Action: Aligning Climate Policies with CRPD and SDGs

One of the core messages of the Round Table Engagement was the call to action directed towards CSOs, rights holders, and policymakers. AWWDI urged these groups to advocate for climate policies that align with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The organization outlined specific focus areas where climate action must intersect with disability rights, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach that addresses both environmental and social justice. These focus areas include:

  • Goal 1: No Poverty – Recognizing that climate change exacerbates poverty, especially among women with disabilities, and advocating for economic resilience and social protection measures.
  • Goal 5: Gender Equality – Promoting gender-responsive climate policies that empower women with disabilities and ensure their participation in decision-making processes.
  • Goal 13: Climate Action – Pushing for climate strategies that explicitly include the needs and contributions of persons with disabilities, ensuring that they are not left behind in the global response to climate change.

AWWDI’s call to action highlighted the importance of crafting policies that do more than just mitigate the effects of climate change; they must also dismantle the barriers that prevent women with disabilities from thriving in a changing environment.

A Milestone for Inclusive Climate Action

The Round Table Engagement was widely regarded as a milestone in the movement towards disability-inclusive climate action. It provided a platform for meaningful dialogue and laid the groundwork for future collaborations aimed at ensuring that climate policies are not only inclusive but also transformative.

Participants at the event expressed optimism that the discussions would translate into concrete actions, leading to the development and implementation of policies that protect the rights and enhance the resilience of women with disabilities.

AWWDI reiterated its commitment to this cause, pledging to continue its advocacy efforts until the rights and needs of women with disabilities are fully integrated into climate action strategies at all levels.

In her closing remarks, a representative from AWWDI stated, “Today marks a significant step forward in our collective journey towards achieving climate justice for all. We remain steadfast in our resolve to advocate for policies that are inclusive, equitable, and reflective of the realities faced by women with disabilities. Together, we can create a future where no one is left behind.”

The Round Table Engagement concluded with a renewed sense of purpose among participants, who left the event inspired to drive change in their respective spheres of influence. As the world grapples with the escalating impacts of climate change, AWWDI’s efforts underscore the importance of ensuring that climate action is inclusive, equitable, and accessible to all, particularly those who are most vulnerable.
