UMUAHIA, NIGERIA — The newly established Abia State Commission for the Welfare of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) has pledged to tackle the pressing issue of non-inclusion of PWDs in government programs and activities, a problem that has long plagued the disability community in the state. This was disclosed by Mr. David Anyaele, the Chairman of the Commission, during a press briefing held in Umuahia on Wednesday.
In his address, Mr. Anyaele lamented the exclusion of PWDs from the decision-making processes within the Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of the government. He noted that this exclusion is a key challenge confronting the disability community in Abia State, contributing to persistent discrimination and other harmful practices against PWDs.
Addressing the Non-Inclusion of PWDs
Mr. Anyaele emphasized that one of the Commission’s primary objectives will be to rectify this issue by ensuring that PWDs are included in all government programs and activities. He underscored the need for a more inclusive approach that recognizes the rights and contributions of PWDs in society.
“We will ensure that public infrastructures that host these institutions are accessible, with the enabling policy framework to guide MDAs’ response to disability issues,” Mr. Anyaele stated. He further expressed the Commission’s commitment to rolling out a series of programs aimed at raising awareness about the rights of PWDs and combating the entrenched discrimination they face.
Education and Healthcare Access for PWDs
In addition to addressing issues of inclusion, the Commission will focus on improving access to education and healthcare services for PWDs in the state. Mr. Anyaele highlighted the struggles many PWDs face in accessing jobs, even after successfully completing their education. He pledged that the Commission would work tirelessly to ensure the implementation of the Abia State Commission for Disabled Persons Law 2022, particularly in relation to employment opportunities for PWDs.
The Commission’s strategic plan, currently under development, aims to engage both local and international agencies in its efforts to enhance the welfare of PWDs in Abia State. By collaborating with these agencies, the Commission hopes to create a more supportive environment that enables PWDs to fully participate in all aspects of society.
Gratitude to Governor Alex Otti
Mr. Anyaele also took the opportunity to express his gratitude to Governor Alex Otti for his decisive action in establishing and inaugurating the Board of the Abia State Commission for the Welfare of Persons with Disabilities. He described the Governor’s initiative as a “great milestone” in the promotion and protection of the rights and dignity of the disability community in Abia State.
“The establishment of this Commission is a significant step forward for PWDs in Abia,” Mr. Anyaele remarked. “It signifies a commitment from the state government to address the unique challenges faced by PWDs and to work towards a more inclusive society.”
Looking Ahead: A Strategic Plan for Inclusion
As the Commission begins its work, it will focus on developing and implementing a strategic plan that addresses the specific needs of PWDs in Abia State. This plan will guide the Commission’s activities and ensure that its efforts are aligned with the broader goals of disability inclusion and empowerment.
Mr. Anyaele concluded his address by calling on all stakeholders, including government officials, civil society organizations, and the general public, to support the Commission’s efforts. He emphasized that achieving true inclusion for PWDs requires collective action and a sustained commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of every individual, regardless of their physical or mental abilities.
A New Dawn for PWDs in Abia State
The establishment of the Abia State Commission for the Welfare of Persons with Disabilities marks a new dawn for PWDs in the state. With a focus on inclusion, access to essential services, and the enforcement of disability rights laws, the Commission is poised to make significant strides in improving the lives of PWDs across Abia State.
As the Commission rolls out its programs and begins to address the challenges facing the disability community, there is renewed hope that PWDs in Abia State will finally have the opportunity to participate fully in all aspects of life, free from discrimination and with the support they need to thrive.
