NCPWD Condemns Alleged Police Assault on Renowned Disability Rights Advocate Hamza Waziri

In a recent turn of events that has sparked widespread outrage, the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has issued a strong condemnation following the alleged assault on Hamza Waziri, a prominent figure in the disability advocacy community, by officers of the Nigeria Police Force. This incident, which has been vividly captured in a video currently making rounds on social media, depicts Mr. Waziri being subjected to brutal treatment while participating in a peaceful protest in front of the Bauchi State Government House.

Hamza Waziri is not just an ordinary citizen. He is a highly respected member of the community and holds several prestigious titles. He serves on the Board of Trustees for Connected Development (CODE), is a Mandela Washington Fellow, a Chevening Fellow, and the Founder of the Initiative for the Liberalization of Physically Challenged People in Nigeria. His relentless efforts and commitment to advocating for the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities have brought about significant progress in the fight for inclusivity in Nigeria.

The video of Mr. Waziri’s assault is alarming and has drawn immediate condemnation from various quarters. The NCPWD, in their statement, described the actions of the police officers involved as “reprehensible” and a direct violation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act of 2018, as well as the fundamental human rights enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution. The Commission emphasized that such acts are unacceptable and demand immediate and decisive action.

Dr. James David Lalu, the Executive Secretary of the NCPWD, stated, “The actions of the police officers involved are a clear violation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act of 2018 and the fundamental human rights enshrined in our constitution. The NCPWD calls on the Nigeria Police Force to set a high standard for upholding these laws and to lead by example in the enforcement of anti-discrimination policies.”

The NCPWD has called for a thorough investigation into the incident and for immediate disciplinary measures to be taken against those responsible. The Commission’s statement underscores the need for the Nigeria Police Force to reaffirm its commitment to safeguarding the rights of all citizens, including those with disabilities, and to ensure that such violations do not occur in the future.

In a noteworthy part of the statement, the NCPWD mentioned their stance on the ongoing protests. They opined that while protests are a constitutional right, the specific protest in question was “needless” given the circumstances. They highlighted that “seeds, when sowed, take time to germinate,” suggesting that the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu deserves the support and patience of the citizenry to implement its policies effectively. However, this perspective does not detract from their unwavering support for Mr. Waziri and the broader disability community in their struggle against discrimination and violence.

The assault on Hamza Waziri has not only brought attention to the broader issues faced by persons with disabilities in Nigeria but has also highlighted the urgent need for systemic changes within law enforcement agencies. It raises questions about the training and sensitization of police officers regarding the rights and dignities of individuals with disabilities.

Civil society organizations, human rights activists, and international observers have also weighed in on the incident, calling for justice and reforms. The collective outcry emphasizes the importance of holding those in positions of authority accountable for their actions and ensuring that the laws protecting the rights of persons with disabilities are strictly enforced.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that persons with disabilities continue to face in Nigeria. Despite significant strides in advocacy and policy, instances of discrimination and violence persist. The NCPWD’s strong condemnation and call for action reflect a broader commitment to fostering an inclusive society where every individual, regardless of their physical abilities, is treated with respect and dignity.

As the investigation unfolds, the NCPWD, along with other advocacy groups, will undoubtedly keep a close watch on the proceedings. The outcome of this case could set a significant precedent for how such matters are handled in the future and could pave the way for more robust protections and rights for persons with disabilities in Nigeria.

The NCPWD’s statement concluded with a powerful message: “We urge all relevant authorities to take swift action to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future and to ensure that the rights of persons with disabilities are upheld and protected at all times.”

This call to action resonates deeply within the community and serves as a rallying cry for continued vigilance and advocacy. The incident involving Hamza Waziri has not only exposed a grievous injustice but has also galvanized a movement towards a more just and inclusive society.
