Aba, Nigeria – The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD) has vehemently condemned the recent killing of two policemen at Opobo Junction in Aba, Abia State. This tragedy adds to a disturbing trend of targeted attacks on security personnel in the region, marking a grim chapter in the state’s security landscape.
In a strongly worded statement, FENRAD expressed deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen officers, the Abia State Command of the Nigerian Police Force, and all those affected by the heinous act. The advocacy group, known for its pro-democracy and environmental rights stance, called for immediate and decisive action to curb the escalating violence.
A Growing Threat in Aba
The recent spate of violence, particularly in Aba and its surrounding areas, has raised significant alarm. In less than two months, multiple security personnel, including military and police officers, have been killed by unidentified assailants. This unsettling trend underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures and intelligence gathering in the region.
FENRAD’s Executive Director, Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, highlighted the importance of understanding the dynamics and trends of these attacks. “The fact that these murderers limit their evil operation to Aba and its suburbs speaks volumes. There is now a compelling need to increase intelligence gathering in the Aba coordinates as a preemptory security measure,” Nwafor stated. He emphasized the necessity of a strategic, tailored, and targeted rapid response to prevent further loss of life and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
A Call for Comprehensive Security Measures
Acknowledging Aba’s role as the economic engine of Abia State, FENRAD urged the state government to take all necessary measures to ensure adequate security. The advocacy group called for a thorough analysis of the recent attacks, noting the potential involvement of faceless groups possibly motivated by separatist agendas.
In a bold move, FENRAD also called for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The organization argued that Kanu’s release could help restore calm not only in Abia State but across the entire Southeast region. “This remains a win-win solution to the mounting regional insecurity being witnessed in Alaigbo,” FENRAD asserted.
Condemnation of Violence and a Plea for Justice
FENRAD’s statement was unequivocal in its condemnation of the recent killings. The organization decried the violent acts as inhumane, regardless of the underlying motivations. “These violent killings, whatever factor or factors, alien or local, that are precipitating them, whether agitation for separate existence or some political motivation, remain inhuman,” Nwafor said.
The advocacy group called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of all individuals involved in the recent crime, urging the authorities to act swiftly against both known and unknown perpetrators.
