Landmark Collaboration: Centre for Citizens With Disabilities, NSCDC Forge Path for Inclusive Policies

In a significant step towards fostering inclusivity, the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) paid a momentous courtesy visit to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on February 6, 2024. The newly appointed Commandant of Corps, Adedotun Sunday Keshinro, showcased a resolute commitment to uphold all the pledges made by his predecessor, Usman Alfadarai.

During the visit, the Interim Head of CCD, Mrs. Florence Austin extended heartfelt congratulations to Commandant Keshinro and lauded the NSCDC’s leadership for their diligence in fulfilling commitments. Emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts, she underscored the need to jointly work towards advancing the rights and development of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

The CCD representative took advantage of the occasion to advocate for crucial aspects, including the incorporation of budget allocations for disabilities, ensuring the accessibility of NSCDC offices to PWDs, establishment of a disability desk office, and the recruitment of sign language interpreters.

In response, Commandant Keshinro expressed commendation for the CCD’s dedicated efforts in championing disability-related issues. He assured the visiting team that, in alignment with disability laws, he would continue to be a staunch advocate for the rights of PWDs. Addressing concerns about office accessibility, the Commandant acknowledged that immediate reconstruction might be challenging but pledged to incorporate accessibility features in new structures.

On the topic of budget allocation, he explained that the process might take time but highlighted its importance. Regarding the recruitment of sign language interpreters, Commandant Keshinro disclosed that the matter has been escalated to headquarters, awaiting feedback. He also expressed openness to having NSCDC officers trained in sign language.

In a reassuring conclusion, Commandant Keshinro assured the CCD that the expertise of PWDs would be fully harnessed during the construction of the new Command building to ensure optimal accessibility.

This groundbreaking collaboration between CCD and NSCDC marks a crucial stride towards fostering inclusivity and championing the rights of PWDs in Nigeria. As both organizations join forces, the promise of a more accessible and equitable future for citizens with disabilities is on the horizon. Stay tuned for further updates on this transformative partnership!
