I make liquid soap, Vaseline, bake cakes, chin chin and other flour products for sale.

TQM. Do people patronize your products, despite the fact that you are a person with visual disability?

I don’t face any discrimination with these aspect of my life.

TQM. What about the abuse of your rights because of your disability, any experience?

Yes, l have experienced this. I use to operate a provision shop, some dishonest people, repeatedly come in the name of buying something, they will give me a certain money note and say its a higher denomination, which is not, and because, l cannot see, l end up parting with items and money in the name of giving them, a supposed change of their money. That is how lost that business.

TQM. What did you do with such people?

I don’t have the money to pay for shop rent.

TQM. Do people patronize your products, despite your disability?

Some people do but some don’t. Some see buying products, ( which l have made ) from me, or other persons with disability as a sign of bad omen.

Oyo Govt Appoints a Lawyer with disability As State Counsel

0

The Oyo State Government has presented an appointment letter to Mr Fadiya Babatunde to join the State’s Civil Service as State Counsel.

Speaking on behalf of the Oyo State Government at the State Secretariat during presentation of appointment letter to Mr Babatunde on Thursday was Barrister Ayodele Adekanbi, Executive Assistant on Persons with Disabilities to Governor Seyi Makinde.

Adekanbi expressed appreciation to the Governor for his all inclusive approach to governance.

He further went on to explain that Mr Babatunde had initially sought to apply to the State teaching service commission to be employed as a teacher, a move he considered an anomaly – a qualified lawyer teaching at secondary level.

He recalled personally presenting Babatunde’s case to Governor Makinde who readily took it up by instructing that he, Adekanbi ensures that Babatunde secured a job at the State Ministry of Justice.

The Governor’s aide also commented on those Persons with Disabilities who protested at the State Secretariat in November by barricading the entrance. He remarked that they did so innocently, without engaging his office or the State Teaching Service Commission, adding that the issue has since been resolved.

Adekanbi said, “firstly, let me quickly clear the air on those that protested the other day that they protested innocently without engaging in any form of dialogue with my office or the Teaching Service Commission. Luckily, the matter has since been sorted out and they have written an apology to the appropriate office”.

“It is a great thing to know that we have been able to settle that amicably and in a matter of few days we will be presenting letters of appointment to 150 teaching and 50 non teaching staffs.

“Today, I feel great because one of my learned colleague and friend in the bar has gotten his letter. We are trying to encourage Persons with Disabilities to become professionals.

“This will be encouragement for Persons with Disabilities, especially those living with visual impairment to be more determined to get an education and be certified because a visually impaired person can not do petty jobs, go to the market, ride motorcycle, farm, work in the bank or even as a messenger.

“The only option left for us is to study and get certified so that our people too, can be better positioned for opportunities like this. I want to assure everyone with disabilities that Governor Makinde is seriously concerned about their welfare too.”

Speaking earlier, the beneficiary, Mr Fadiya Babatunde, shortly after receiving his appointment letter expressed appreciation to Governor Makinde for giving him the opportunity to serve in the Oyo State judiciary as State counsel.

Babatunde, who is a law graduate from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) also thanked Barrister Ayodele Adekanbi, for his relentless support all through the entire process of interview and aptitude test, adding that he has been struggling to get the State government job since 2016. He described his feeling as “absolutely delighted”
