Group prepare PWDs for Chevening Scholarship, urges them to take up the opportunity

It was a joyful gathering persons with disabilities with the purpose of introducing Chevening Scholarship opportunity.

On Tuesday 24th August, 2021, what seen as yearly ritual once the application of Chevening Scholarship opens, Peniel Foundation in collaboration with British High Commission with the assistance of Dr. Israel Balogun put together sensitization program for persons with disabilities in Nigeria on how to apply for Chevening Scholarship and after the sensitization, the team would guide those who are interested to apply.

This exercise has been on for some years and their efforts have helped in a lot of persons with disabilities to receive what one can refer to Chevening Love Letter and they have gone to UK to acquire their master’s degree all expenses paid. This year, about five persons with disabilities would be going to UK to study courtesy of Chevening Scholarship.

Oluwafunmilayo Ladepo, The Chevening Programme Officer Abuja, while welcoming the participants, inform them that Chevening Scholarship is one of the best opportunity for who wishes to study in the UK at no cost. She encouraged the participants to apply and assured them that Chevening do not segregate, everyone no matter your background, can apply and stand a chance of being selected.

She stated that what matters most is being able to articulate your leadership and influence properly in an essay including your plans after the study in UK. She assured that once a story is inspiring and convincing, there is every likelihood that such story would be selected.

She also informed that Chevening Scholarship is highly competitive so she advised the participants should carefully put together their essay, consult widely, get people to review the essay, make sure that they are telling the truth about themselves and be mindful of all Chevening deadlines.

Other past Chevening Scholars shared their stories on how they made it and advised the participants on the key points they should consider while applying.

Avershim Akighir, representing Peniel Foundation narrated the story of the founder on how she became passionate about disability issues and she also expressed the foundation’s commitment towards ensuring that a lot of persons with disabilities secure their masters’ degree through Chevening Scholarship.

The Executive Secretary, National Commission of Persons with disabilities (NCPWD), Mr. James Lalu while speaking on the event called on Nigerians to be more committed in building the country because the UK, everyone is talking about, it is human beings that built it to an enviable height.

He urged the participants not to allow the opportunity slip away, stating that it is an opportunity for them to go out, study, come back and contribute to the growth of the country.

He applauded the initiative, stating that Commission need PWDs who are professionals to come back to contribute to the growth of the Commission.

The teams volunteered to help the participants review their essays, they gave out their numbers and promised to entertain questions via phone.
